Hume Lake Campground

Overview

Hume Lake Campground is situated in the high-altitude beauty of the Sequoia National Forest in California. Managed as part of the broader Hume Lake Christian Camps network, this destination offers a peaceful, mountainous escape for those looking to connect with nature. The environment is heavily wooded, providing a rustic and serene atmosphere that emphasizes outdoor living. It is a traditional forest camping experience where the focus remains on the surrounding natural landscape rather than modern luxury resort accommodations.

Location & Surroundings

Located deep within the Kings Canyon area, the campground is surrounded by the towering pines and granite peaks of the Sierra Nevada mountains. The elevation ensures cooler temperatures during the summer months, making it a popular refuge from the valley heat. Guests are nestled in a mountainous woodland setting, offering quiet mornings and starry night skies. The isolation of the area provides a genuine sense of seclusion while keeping visitors within reach of essential mountain exploration.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground focuses on core camping necessities rather than extravagant RV amenities. Guests will find standard campsites capable of accommodating various setups, though visitors should verify site sizes for larger rigs due to the natural forest terrain. Basic facilities including restrooms and potable water are available on-site to support a comfortable stay. The site is designed to encourage time spent outdoors, meaning the infrastructure prioritizes functionality and integration with the forested environment over paved pads or full resort-style utility hookups.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Hume Lake itself is the primary draw, offering visitors opportunities for swimming, fishing, and non-motorized boating. The lake provides a scenic centerpiece for family activities and quiet reflection. Beyond the water, the campground serves as an excellent base for hiking trails that wind through the Sequoia National Forest. For those interested in giant trees, the famous groves of Kings Canyon National Park are accessible for day trips, allowing travelers to experience some of the most impressive natural wonders in the world.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for nature enthusiasts and families who prefer a simple, unplugged camping experience. If you value quiet mornings, hiking access, and being surrounded by forest rather than a high-end RV resort, this location will suit your travel style perfectly. It is well-suited for those who are self-sufficient and looking to immerse themselves in the Sierra Nevada wilderness. It remains a top choice for travelers who seek a traditional outdoor getaway.

Gorgeous, stunning, well-maintained campground. Labor Day Weekend is pretty crowded with those who come for the annual Country Fair. Lots of families, dogs, bikes, pop-up tents, kayaks, etc! The trail around the lake is great for walking or jogging. There’s no cell service up in the mountains and the roads to get to the campground are very windy. There are several little shops and stores for snacks or Hume apparel. Picked up a few postcards at the Hume Lake General store and noticed there’s a post office right behind the store. It’s like a little town! There are kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards available to rent per-hour, half day, or whole day. The lake is beautiful at all times of the day and this campground is a beautiful place to enjoy nature and explore the woods.

Amazing campground with plenty of camping space! Bathrooms are okay and have flush toilets. Check out Hume lake in the morning and at the dawn for picturesque views of it! Book early in advance it’s one of the most popular campgrounds in the area and all for the right reasons!

When renting a camping spot, go through the state park website. The rented spot will be numbered and have your name. The spot includes an area to fit a tent plus some space, parking, a fire pit, and a picnic table. Restrooms are nearby. Pet friendly. There's a store nearby but limited supplies. Lake was beautiful. Bring a flashlight!

Beautiful scenery, small quiet lake, sandy beach area to hang out in the water, with store nearby if needed for last minute items, great spacious camp sites too along with trails for hiking nearby.

I would definitely stay at Hume Lake again! The hosts were great, coming around from time to time to make sure everything was going good. NO CELL RECEPTION UP THERE. We have T-Mobile so be prepared for that. The space we stayed at was #62. The view of the lake was not bad. (We thought this was tent only campground so when the giant RV pulled in across from us, it blocked our view of the lake, bummer) You can see it thru the trees still. Our campsite was slightly at a slope with some uneven ground. But nothing serious. You could fit only 2 cars in our space. Looks like all the campsites have a bear safe container, an old wooden picnic table, and a grill/fire pit included. We did have a water spigot across from us. The bathrooms were clean, but they didn't have lights inside. Bring a flashlight. They also have large trash cans at a designated area on the campsite. It seems like the entire national park had free chopped up large pieces of wood everywhere. But I would definitely bring a saw or ax to chop it up. Also, everytime we prepared food at the campsite, there were these little yellow bees that wanted any type of food we had out. Really annoying. They weren't the common bees you see on flowers, but they only came around when food was out. Something to think about. Obviously there were mosquitoes too. Bring bug spray. There is a Christian Camp across from the lake that Some say gets loud when they are open season. Keeps that in mind if you want to avoid that noise. Some places we definitely recommend visiting around the park is Mist falls trail. It's about an hour away from Hume Lake. Very long hike so bring good hiking shoes, snacks and lots of water. Very easy/moderate hike. Look it up. And go see the amazing General Grant tree. Those giant Sequoia trees are breath taking.
