Stanislaus/Deadman
Overview
Deadman Campground offers a serene and deeply immersive escape within the heart of the Stanislaus National Forest. Located at a high elevation along the scenic Highway 108 corridor, this US Forest Service facility provides a traditional, no-frills camping experience that emphasizes nature over technology. Visitors come here to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with the rugged, natural beauty of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. It is a seasonal destination, typically welcoming travelers from late spring through early autumn when the mountain passes are clear of snow.
Location & Surroundings
Perched at an elevation of approximately 6,300 feet, the campground is situated near the small mountain community of Dardanelle. The landscape is defined by soaring Jeffrey pines and massive granite boulders, creating a quintessential alpine atmosphere. The Middle Fork Stanislaus River flows in close proximity, providing a constant, soothing soundtrack of rushing water and easy access to the riverbanks. Its location along the Sonora Pass route offers some of the most dramatic mountain vistas and pristine wilderness air in Northern California.
Amenities & Park Features
As a rustic forest service site, Deadman focuses on preserving the natural environment rather than providing luxury resort amenities. Each campsite is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a steel fire ring for evening gatherings. While there are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups, the park provides access to vault toilets and potable water via communal spigots. Most sites are paved and level, though large rigs should navigate carefully as the campground is better suited for those who appreciate a more intimate, forested layout.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The surrounding area is a premier playground for outdoor enthusiasts. The river is a top-tier destination for trout fishing, while nearby trails offer immediate access to the sprawling Emigrant Wilderness. A short drive up the highway leads to the stunning Sonora Pass and the Pacific Crest Trail, where hikers can experience incredible high-altitude treks and summer wildflowers. For a break from campfire cooking, the historic Dardanelle Resort is located nearby, offering a local general store and seasonal dining for visitors.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for boondocking enthusiasts and nature lovers who value solitude and scenery over modern amenities. If you enjoy crisp mountain air and have a self-sufficient RV setup, this campground will perfectly fit your travel style. It is best suited for small to mid-sized RVs, camper vans, and truck campers, making it an excellent basecamp for dedicated anglers, landscape photographers, and those seeking a true wilderness experience away from the crowds of more developed parks.

It's not easy to get a campground here but it's absolutely worth it. Host was amazing, river was beautiful, the night sky was stunning. Probably also the cleanest vault toilet I've seen!

Tuff to get a site, but we got lucky on one of the very, very few first come sites, like one, lol, besides the group site, which is pricey 😲 very nice well kept camp. Host was great, river is close. Horse rides are a blast. Fishing could be much better.....

Tent camped four days in the walk-in site by the river. Camp host was professional and friendly. Day hiked and enjoyed a 1/2 day guided horse ride. Good place for experienced campers and riders.

Beautiful campground. Kenny (the camp host) was very nice and informative. Walking distance to Kennedy Meadows Resort. Located by the river.

Beautiful spot, Make sure to bring sleeping bags that are very warm because it gets very very very cold at night and also make sure everything you bring us waterproof because the weather is so unpredictable we got stormed out and had to leave early when we already paid a $100 for the nights.
